Before getting a breast augmentation, it is important to be aware of what the recovery process entails so you can prepare accordingly. This blog discusses the breast augmentation recovery timeline and what steps patients can take to prepare for their recovery period.

Healing After Breast Augmentation

Many women who are planning to get breast augmentation surgery are eager to enjoy their new voluptuous breasts. Yet before you’re able to head to the beach in a bikini and show off your breast augmentation results, you’ll have to go through the recovery process. Your body must get the proper rest needed to fully heal after undergoing surgery.

Breast augmentation recovery can be daunting for some patients, especially when factoring in time off work and restrictions on activities. However, it is all in your body’s best interest to support the healing process and get you to enjoy your new breasts as soon as possible. In order to have a smooth recovery, we recommend patients prepare for this period ahead of time so they can have everything they need when they come home from surgery.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline

It’s crucial to recognize that everyone’s body is unique and will heal at an individual pace. This uniqueness is what makes your recovery journey special. Knowing the general breast augmentation recovery timeline can be beneficial so you have an idea of what to expect, but remember, your journey is your own.

The first couple of days after your surgery will typically be when you experience the most discomfort. Your breasts will feel tight, sore, and sensitive. It’s important to remember that this is only temporary and a part of the healing process. Your surgeon may prescribe pain-relieving medications to help make you more comfortable during this time, providing reassurance and comfort.

During the first week of your recovery, your breast implants will begin to settle into your chest. You can expect significant swelling and bruising to occur, and you may feel moderate to severe pain. This is typically the most difficult week of recovery, as the swelling and other discomforts will subside within the next few weeks.

Many patients with office jobs or jobs that don’t require strenuous physical activity are able to go back to work one week after surgery. It’s crucial to take it easy during recovery, avoid intense physical activity and most importantly, abide by your surgeon’s aftercare instructions. This responsible and proactive approach is key to a successful recovery. It is also important to note that patients must avoid sleeping on their sides or stomachs during recovery, as this puts pressure on the implants and can cause complications. Breast augmentation patients are usually fully recovered around four to six weeks after surgery.

How Can I Prepare for Breast Augmentation Recovery?

The more you prepare before your breast augmentation, the easier things will be when you come home from surgery. Some things you may want to do before your procedure include:

  • Request time off work for your procedure and recovery period
  • Choose someone you trust to take you to and from your surgery
  • Arrange for babysitters and/or petsitters if needed
  • Buy groceries and meal prep healthy, nutritious foods
  • Set aside loose-fitting clothing, preferably ones with buttons or zippers down the front (since you won’t be able to lift your arms during the first few days of recovery)
  • Pick up pain medications and compression bra
  • Purchase a wedge pillow or prop up pillows in your bed to help you sleep at an elevated angle
